Mark Zuckerberg stated in a communication to the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Monday that his company was pressured by the Biden administration in 2021 to limit certain COVID-19 content, such as humor and satire.

“In the year 2021, senior members from the Biden White House, including the White House, constantly urged our Special Education teams for months to censor some content about COVID-19, including humor and satire, and showed significant frustration with our teams when we didn’t agree, ” Zuckerberg noted.

In his communication to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg said that the influence he felt in 2021 was “wrong” and he regrets that his company, the parent of Facebook and Instagram, was not more outspoken. He added that with Viral Video the “benefit of hindsight and new information,” there were decisions made in that year that “wouldn’t be made today.”

“Like I told our teams back then, I feel strongly that we should not lower our content standards due to pressure from any government from either side â€" and we’re prepared to resist if something like this happens again, ” he wrote.

President Biden remarked in July Self-advocacy 2021 that social media platforms are “killing people” with misinformation about the pandemic.

Though Biden later walked back these comments, US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy said at the time that misinformation posted on social media was a “serious threat to public health.”

A White House spokesperson responded to Zuckerberg’s letter, stating the administration at the time was promoting “responsible measures to safeguard public health.”

“Our position has Trolls On Social Media been clear and consistent: we think tech companies and other private actors should take into account the effects their actions have on the public, while making their own decisions about the information they present, ” according to the White House representative.

Zuckerberg further mentioned in the communication that the FBI warned his company about possible Russian disinformation regarding Hunter Biden and Burisma affecting the election Cyberbullying in 2020.

That fall, Zuckerberg said, his team temporarily demoted reporting from the New York Post alleging the Biden family of corruption while their fact-checkers could assess the report.

Zuckerberg stated that since then, it has “become clear that the reporting was not Russian disinformation, and in hindsight, we shouldn’t have demoted the story.”

Meta has since changed its policies and processes to “make sure this doesn’t Parent-child Relationship happen again” and will not reduce the visibility of content in the US pending fact-checking.

In the communication to the Judiciary Committee, Zuckerberg stated he will avoid repeating the actions he took in 2020 when he assisted “electoral infrastructure.”

“The idea here was to ensure local election authorities across the country had the necessary resources to help people vote safely during a pandemic,” said the Meta Acceptance Speech CEO.

Zuckerberg said the initiatives were designed to be nonpartisan but said “some people believed this work benefited one party over the other.” Zuckerberg said his goal is to be “neutral” so he will not make “a similar contribution this cycle.”

The GOP representatives on the House Judiciary Committee posted the letter on X and said Zuckerberg “has admitted that the Biden-Harris administration influenced Facebook to Children With Disabilities restrict American content, Facebook censored Americans, and Facebook limited the Hunter Biden laptop story.”

The Meta chief has long faced scrutiny from congressional Republicans, who have accused Facebook and other large technology platforms of being prejudiced against conservatives. While Zuckerberg has stressed that Meta impartially enforces its rules, the narrative has become entrenched in conservative communities. Republican lawmakers have specifically examined Facebook’s decision to limit

the circulation of a New York Post story about Hunter Biden.

In testimony before Congress in the past years, Zuckerberg has attempted to close the gap between his social media company and policymakers to limited success.

In a 2020 Senate session, Zuckerberg acknowledged that many of Facebook’s employees are liberal. But he maintained that the company ensures political bias does not influence its decisions.

In addition, he Free Menstrual Products stated Facebook’s content moderators, many of whom are contractors, are based worldwide and “the geographic diversity of that is more representative of the community that we serve than just the full-time employee base in our headquarters in the Bay Area.”

In June, in a win for the White House, the Supreme Court decided 6-3 that the plaintiffs in a case accusing the federal government of ADHD censoring conservative voices on social media had no legal standing.

Writing for the majority, Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, “to establish standing, the plaintiffs must show a substantial risk that, in the near future, they will suffer an injury that is traceable to a government defendant.” Coney Barrett continued, “because no plaintiff has carried that burden, none has standing to request a preliminary injunction.”
